In a sign that discount retailers are continuing to use salaries as a weapon in the fight for market share, Penny is giving its staff a CZK 1,000 raise. Those in the most junior positions will have a basic wage of CZK 24,000 while the most experienced employees will be on the books at CZK 30,000 gross. Penny is calculating this as a 5 percent hike. It makes working for the growing retail chain only slightly less attractive than the national average which is currently CZK 33,697. The median monthly salary, meaning the one that half the country works for, is CZK 29,549 per month.
