27 February 2022

Another humanitarian train to help refugees from Ukraine will leave Bohumín tonight. He will travel to the Ukrainian Čop near the Slovak border to transport women and children to safety, Petr Šťáhlavský, a spokesman for the national carrier of the Czech Railways, informed today. On Friday, ČD has already sent two trains to help people fleeing Ukraine. They went to Przemyśl, Poland, from where only one of them had returned on Saturday evening. The second remains in Przemyśl.

Today’s train will leave Bohumín at 21:38, ČD said. It is being prepared in cooperation with the Slovak national carrier ZSSK and Ukrainian Railways. “At the request of Ukraine and in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic, we have quickly prepared the third train for the transport of women and children from Ukraine. Our train will depart from Bohumín via Žilina, Košice and tomorrow (Monday) “We will deliver material humanitarian aid there. Everyone who wants to send aid to Ukraine can bring selected items to the train depot at Bohumín station today, which we will transport to Čop,” said Jiří Ješeta, Deputy General Director for Passenger Transport of Czech Railways.

The train will have ten cars and a planned capacity of approximately 600 people. The carrier assumes his arrival in the Czech Republic on Monday evening or night. People can bring bottled water, blankets, sleeping bags and mats, durable food, protein bars, analgesics, baby diapers or toiletries such as handkerchiefs and toilet paper until 21:15.

Czech Railways sent two trains for Ukrainian refugees from Bohumín on Friday evening and arrived at the destination station in Přemyšl near the Polish-Ukrainian border around 02:00 on Saturday. Red Cross paramedics traveled on trains and the trains carried several hundred liters of bottled water and 700 blankets for refugees. The first of them brought 13 women and children to Bohumín on Saturday evening. All of them then continued on their way to Brno and Prague.

Trains are free for refugees. In addition to special trains, the state carrier has also allowed free transportation on its trains to Ukrainian citizens who want to return to their homeland since Friday. The measure is intended to facilitate the relocation of Ukrainians, mainly to Bohumín, from where it is possible to continue via Poland to Ukraine, as ČD does not operate its own line to Ukraine.
